COASTAL CITY BALLET PRESENTS: COPPÉLIA
Friday, June 6th, 2025 | 7:00PM
Surrey Arts Center
Address: 13750 88 Ave, Surrey, BC V3W 3L1
Coastal City Ballet brings the delightful comedic ballet Coppélia to Vancouver audiences for the highlight of its 2024/2025 season. Coppélia tells a whimsical tale of love, mistaken identity, and playful deception: Along with colorful costumes and fantastical sets, it is a ballet the whole family will enjoy. Following the tremendous success of Giselle in 2024, Coastal City Ballet presents this family-friendly production on June 6th at Surrey Arts Centre.
Coppélia is a beloved three-act ballet, originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon, with a lively score by Léo Delibes based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story Der Sandmann (The Sandman). It premiered on May 25, 1870, at the Paris Opéra and has remained a favorite in the classical ballet repertoire.
Set in a charming European village, we meet, Swanilda, the spirited heroine her fiancé, Franz, Dr Coppelius the toymaker and Coppélia, a mysterious girl who silently sits on a balcony. Unbeknownst to the villagers, Coppélia is actually a life-sized doll, created by the eccentric toymaker Dr. Coppélius. Determined to uncover the truth, Swanilda and her friends sneak into his workshop, discovering the doll’s secret. What transpires is pure chaos and hilarity.
The ballet concludes with a joyous village celebration of Swanhilda and Franz marriage, with dances that are synonymous with Coppelia.
Everyone including children of any age requires a ticket. Children of school age qualify for the student pricing. Anyone with a Student ID card (high school, college/university, etc.) qualifies for the student pricing.
Doors open 60 min before show time.
