SAMAR: {summit; kama} is a Bharatanatyam margam (presentation) performed with live Carnatic music and led by acclaimed dancer Sujit Vaidya celebrating the choreographies of his guru, A. Lakshman. This project delves into the dual meanings of "samar"—in Sanskrit, representing Kama, the God of Eros, and in Urdu, signifying a summit or peak—exploring themes of desire, intimacy, and transcendence through the lens of Bharatanatyam.
Featuring renowned musicians Curtis Andrews (mridangam), Arno Kamolika (nattuvangam), Sheema Balakrishna (vocals), and Shriram Rajagopalan (violin), this production offers a rare opportunity to experience Bharatanatyam with its full musical and rhythmic depth.
SAMAR challenges colonial hierarchies in the performing arts, elevating South Asian classical traditions while engaging contemporary conversations on queerness, stillness, and gaze.
